Product-Mindset – Building your own windsurf board.

You might also have a small workshop or a garage where you realise your projects. As a windsurfer I have been dreaming of building my own board for a long time. Is there an idea for your own product somewhere in your mind?

Let’s realise our ideas together and build our own product. Based on the idea, to build a board, I will explain the product-mindset in a simplified way.

Let’s start by defining the two most important terms: ▪️A PRODUCT is a system that solves customer problems and satisfies market demands. A product is created in several sprints.
▪️A PROJECT is a process of creating a product or service. A project corresponds to a sprint in which added value is delivered.

So now that we have clarified this, we get to work.
I have divided my PRODUCT windsurf board into four smaller PROJECTS:

1️⃣ PLANNING – Writing the shopping list, buying material and preparing the workshop
2️⃣ BUILDING – glue the surfboard blank, start shaping the board
3️⃣ ASSEMBLY – Fitting the fin inlays, attachments and finalising it
4️⃣ TESTING – Live tests in the waves of Cape Town
Have we had success with our product? Only the customer can decide that.
For the customer the factors for success are very simple: ✅ It’s fast and ✅ jumps high in the waves.

Now you understand that projects build on each other and lead to the product. Always remember: „It’s not the wind but the sail that determines the direction.“ The focus of project thinking is on delivery and product thinking is on the outcome.

You decide how the product development will proceed, not only the external circumstances.
Because you control the demands of the market, coordinate resources and develop the product vision.

Have fun 🏄🏽
